SOLAR TERM TEA
What is Solar Term?
Solar Term is traditional Chinese lunisolar calendars that matches a particular astronomical event or signifies some natural phenomenon.
Each solar term (14 or 15 days) suggest the position of the sun travels 15 degrees on the ecliptic longitude. A cycle is the earth revolving around the sun for once (a year).
The twenty-four solar terms begins from the Beginning of Spring (Li Chun) and ends at Greater Cold (Da Han).
It originated from China approximately 5000+ years ago, and then spread throughout Korea, Vietnam and Japan, including countries in the East Asian cultural sphere. Although each term was named based on the seasonal changes of climate in North China Plain, people living in the different climates still use it with no changes. This is exhibited by the fact that traditional Chinese, Hanja, and Kanji characters for most of the solar terms are identical.
On December 1, 2016, the Solar Terms were listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The 24 solar terms reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena, agricultural production, and other aspects of human life, they play important roles and have greatly influenced people’s basic needs until now, including clothing, food, housing, and health.
